Serious Lunch: Conan's new stage looks like Super Mario

  • glenn · 6 months ago
They just recognized this on tonights show! They animated the background and all.
  • Matt · 6 months ago
Are you for real? If so, which episode was it, so I can watch @ hulu.com? If not, I am gullible. :)
  • Hamster · 6 months ago
  • Brian · 6 months ago
The animated version on the show tonight was pretty cool.
  • Elsongs · 6 months ago
I wonder if that's what the show's producers Nintended.
  • slowpoke2 · 6 months ago
Look at this, it's Conan's Response to the News of his Super Mario Inspired background on youtube.

    You're kidding right?
  • shortformblog · 6 months ago
    This is beautiful.
  • victoria · 6 months ago
hahaha how funny!!!! you spotted it! :)
  • Rachel · 6 months ago
Yes but these are all screengrabs from DIFFERENT mario games. I call shenanigans.
  • Jay · 6 months ago
Maybe so, but the design still does really seem to barrow from Mario none the less.
  • SpellCheck · 6 months ago
    Borrow.
  • Todd S · 6 months ago
Excellent! Conan yet again sets the bar.
  • Kelli_D · 6 months ago
It obviously looks like a combination of different screens, but it still fits amazingly well.
  • jjbraids · 6 months ago
They are all screen grabs from different games, levels, etc. since they are both simple geometric patterns/shapes, its simple to fill in the blanks with a little photoshop work. The game has NO lines in the sky like that (this was added later by digital artists creating mario wallpapers for desktops).

I say good associative powers by the author, but its not intentional.
  • shortformblog · 6 months ago
    Don't ruin our fun!
  • Stratis · 6 months ago
Haha! They both look great, he should try to get also 3D graphic overlays from the new 3D Mario games!
  • MrZ · 6 months ago
    hahahaha thats hilarious

I AM DENYING THIS!!!!!!!! NO WAI! SHOOPED MOAR SAUCE PL0X!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jon · 6 months ago
So where are the magic mushrooms that make Conan grow to gigantic proportions? haha!
  • AK · 6 months ago
    Jay Leno's ego ate 'em.
  • fallingstairs · 6 months ago
More like his chin. Hahahaha. J/K

    Awesome eye man. :D
  • slap · 6 months ago
Jay Leno is chill. When has he ever come off as egotistical? He always treats his guest with respect, unlike Letterman. Hopefully Conan continues to eat away at Letterman's ratings.
  • The Barbarian · 6 months ago
Based on the fact that NOBODY thinks Jay Leno is funny at all, I deduce that user "slap" actually IS Mr Leno himself
  • Albert Pike · 6 months ago
    Ha! Or his stalker.
  • sarahkp533 · 6 months ago
I love Jay Leno and he makes me laugh. I am SOMEBODY! I just registered so that I could tell you this.
  • Gruppa · 6 months ago
Jay Leno is a douchebag. I live in Burbank and it's quite common to see him running around town in one of his cars. I've met him twice and he's an egotistical blowhard who cries if he doesn't get his way and likes to shout "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?". It really made him mad when I said he was the Doritos guy.
  • Jess · 6 months ago
Not true. I live in the valley and I see him driving his cars all over the place all the time. He is always friendly to everyone and waves.

I will agree that he isn't that funny though, but he does seem nice.
  • Mare · 6 months ago
I agree, Jess. I ran into him in Torrance.. and he was driving one of his cars.. walking into a restaurant. He was mid conversation with some friends but he still smiled back at me when I smiled. I'm shocked that someone has had a negative experience with Jay.
  • Julia · 6 months ago
    Haha! Nice job, Sherlock!
  • Klinny · 6 months ago
You might be on the show tonight:

if you're looking at the mario background, it's different pieces from different backgrounds just pieced together... go figure they made a background out of shapes.

  • Roger · 6 months ago
No coincidence here. It was intentionally done.
  • cart00nstrip · 6 months ago
Way to tap into the nerd market - immediate nostalgia factor for us while telling the rest of the mainstream that video games are cool because Conan endorses them!
  • nicholas · 6 months ago
While awesome, I doubt the show's producers did it on purpose. I think you let your imagination go and it created a fun and clever thing. And now it is becoming an internet thing - that is fun. All of this is great and good. But, just, no. I think it is still great, but no it isn't on purpose. That makes it stop being a fun joke into ... I don't know what.
  • lol · 6 months ago
haha, you are a dumbass. i dont see how anybody can think this is a coincidence.

okay, i am listening to "voyager" by daft punk, and i noticed that the gif goes along to the beat almost perfectly.
  • plebe · 6 months ago
Seriously. Someone should make a YTMND of that, or a video on youtube.
  • wolfbierbaum · 6 months ago
haha you're right! I just tried to make a YTMND but the daft punk mp3 was too big.
  • dave · 6 months ago
    ehhhhh
  • flipjr · 6 months ago
    I love Super Mario... Sweeet!
  • Brian · 6 months ago
Good eye? What level was that from? It seems more to me like you just cut up/edited some Super Mario images... They're not all even from the same video game, it seems. Funny, though, nevertheless.
  • Midori Wada · 6 months ago
Wow. That's crazy. Was it intentional?
  • CoryArmbrecht · 6 months ago
I was kinda thinking the same thing... but I never woulda' taken the time to do THIS! hahaha This is awesome!
  • Daniel · 6 months ago
It seems a bit patched together though.. and adding elements just so that it compares with the conan background.

    Interesting nonetheless. Probably entirely coincidental.
  • Cody · 6 months ago
    lol nice
  • Jennie · 6 months ago
    awesome!
  • Christina D · 6 months ago
All this post claims is that the set resembles super mario's design and he created an example of what it would look like as a level. He's not even saying "OMG! This is totally ripped off from SMB!" So I dunno what some of you are getting all up in arms about it being a patchwork of pictures from different levels... DUH.

  • J · 6 months ago
Well, yeah. It looks very Super Mario...but his set is going with the whole Art Deco theme to harken back to Tonight Shows long past.
  • alan · 6 months ago
I'm surprised that out of 115 comments, you're the only one to point this out. Yup, that pretty much sums it up.
  • sarahkp533 · 6 months ago
Conan explained that either the first day or last Friday when talking to Jay. As someone said earlier, it is just geometric shapes and someone had the time to grab screens and put them into those shapes.
  • Noslak · 6 months ago
I wonder if Nintendo will sue the designer for copyright violations! LOL

HOLY SHIT! That is sick. Nice find!
  • Carl · 6 months ago
Why do you think that is sick?
  • The Pope · 6 months ago
Because I watched the show and didn't even notice it. Also it is pretty sick that my favorite Talk Show host has a Mario Level as his backdrop.
  • Charles · 6 months ago
So you found the actual images even?

  • Dinflux Ed · 6 months ago
Haha, thats awesome whoever did that background. Just to be clear, they just took some mario backgrounds and matched it to conans set. I think some people are still confused that the background image is actually from a mario game.

  • Heather · 6 months ago
    Oh my god it totally does! Great overlay idea!! ^^;
  • CoolGui · 6 months ago
Hah... Pretty astute observation there. The only thing is that it looks like it's not Mushroom Kingdom, but instead Dinosaur World (from Super Mario World on SNES).
  • Elsongs · 6 months ago

It's Conan's response on youtube in youtube HD.

Stupid NBC marked it for copyright infringement... glad to see people hate free advertisement.
  • slowpokex2 · 6 months ago
Come on [NBC] guys, there goes a future cult status all thanks to your legal department. I guess their really afraid of getting sued by Nintendo. Bone head move, their own clip of it isn't of that quality or resolution size.

  • Bryan · 6 months ago
I marked like crazy when Conan showed this the other night.
  • Milton Malt · 6 months ago
I read Nintendo's response, at least it was cool with them.

It's basically just Super Mario World for SNES, along with the All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros 3.

I wonder what it would be like if we got to see Conan play some Nintendo on the set. Maybe some other game.
  • john C · 6 months ago

  • aimee · 6 months ago
yea...so? maybe he's a fan of mario, maybe he's trying to reach out to the teen/young adult community.
  • Reapz · 6 months ago
LOL Great stuff there. You have a very valid point. I'm sure his set designer was a stoner that played way too many video games growing up.
  • Mr. Not Happy · 6 months ago
I don't like Conan O'Brien hosting the Tonight Show. I find him to be boring!! Listening to his jokes are grueling.
  • Jay Aguilar · 5 months ago
That particular screencap used for the Tonight Show backdrop was actually Nintendo's enhanced remake of the original 1985 NES classic developed as on of four original NES Mario Bros games for the SNES in 1993.
